Malcom X’s Journey To Greatness - Episode 6: The Split
Alright, squad, buckle up because things are about to get real.
By the early '60s, Malcolm was the face of the Nation of Islam, but behind the scenes, things were getting messy. He started hearing rumors about Elijah Muhammad that didn’t sit right with him.
The final straw came in 1963 when Malcolm spoke out about JFK’s assassination, calling it “chickens coming home to roost.” Elijah Muhammad wasn’t happy and suspended Malcolm for 90 days.
But our boy Malcolm wasn’t about to be silenced. In March 1964, he dropped a bombshell: he was leaving the Nation of Islam. It was like LeBron leaving the Cavs, but with way higher stakes.
Malcolm didn’t miss a beat, though. He founded his own organization, the Muslim Mosque, Inc., and later the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU). He was evolving, moving away from black separatism and towards a more inclusive approach to civil rights.
This new Malcolm was making waves, but he was also making enemies. The NOI wasn’t happy about losing their star player, and the FBI was watching him closer than ever.
Next episode, we’ll see how Malcolm’s new path led him to some powerful revelations, but also put him in serious danger. Stay woke, bros!
